Sensitive content in ChatGPT
There is no Adult mode or NSFW switch in ChatGPT. The control OpenAI documents is Reduce sensitive content, under Settings, then Safety. It adds limits. It does not remove them.
Updated 2026-09-27
The help article is Reduce sensitive content in ChatGPT. OpenAI discussed a future “adult mode” for verified adults and then delayed it. As of this note, the shipped control is the one that tightens replies, not a mode that asks for explicit chat.
What the setting does
- Teen accounts: Reduce sensitive content is on, and the teen cannot turn it off while teen protections apply
- A parent linked through parental controls may manage it for that teen account
- When an account is treated as 18 or older, the setting turns off. The adult can turn it back on
- If ChatGPT predicts the account holder is under 18, the teen experience can return even after a birthday was entered. An adult can use age verification to ask for that prediction to be lifted
- Education workspaces can force the safeguard. Members cannot override an admin
Where to change it
Open Settings, select Safety, then turn Reduce sensitive content on or off, if your account is allowed to. Turning it off does not create an adult mode. Requests that involve minors, or that the product still refuses, stay refused.
Questions
How do I enable ChatGPT adult mode?
You don’t. That switch is not in the product. Settings → Safety → Reduce sensitive content is the control that exists, and it adds safeguards.
I am 18 and still see the teen filter.
Use the age-verification path in ChatGPT if the product has predicted you are under 18. The help article describes that case.
