IndexChatGPT Canvas
ChatGPT Canvas
Canvas is the panel ChatGPT opens beside the chat when you are editing a document or a piece of code. You comment on a span instead of pasting the whole file back into the thread.
Updated 2026-09-27
OpenAI introduced it in Introducing canvas. Ask ChatGPT to open a canvas, or accept the panel when it offers one on a long draft or a code change. The prose workflow is covered in ChatGPT for writing.
When to use it
- A draft longer than a screen, where you want line-level edits
- A code file you want reviewed in place
- Not a substitute for Codex on a repository. Codex runs in the project; Canvas edits the snippet in the chat
Questions
Is Canvas a paid add-on?
It is a ChatGPT feature, available from the account you already have, subject to the plan’s limits. It is not a second subscription.
How is Canvas different from Prism?
Canvas is inside ChatGPT for general writing and code. Prism is the science workspace built from Crixet.
