Python programming with AI
ChatGPT can teach Python if you bring a real error. Paste the traceback and the function, ask for the smallest change, then run it on your machine.
Updated 2026-09-27
The thread people land on is How can I learn Python or AI programming?. A course path also sits in OpenAI Academy. Codex is the tool when the code already lives in a repo; the chat is enough when you are learning one file.
A loop that teaches
- Say your Python version and what you expected the function to return
- Paste the error, not a screenshot of the whole desktop
- Ask why the change works. A patch you cannot explain will break on the next input
- Keep API keys in the environment. A comment in the file is still in the prompt if you paste the file
- When you want notes inside the prompt itself, read comment prompt
Questions
Will ChatGPT write the whole program?
It will. You still have to run it and read it. For a repository, Codex is the product built for that, with its own usage cap.
Can I learn AI programming the same way?
Yes, one API call at a time, against the current docs. Model names in a six-month-old tutorial are often retired.

- Comment prompt
A comment in a coding prompt is a note the model still reads. In Python, # lines are for you and for the model, not a hidden channel.

OpenAI Academy is the free course library at openai.com/academy, with tracks for writing and workspace agents. It is not a university.

Create an OpenAI API key at platform.openai.com. Usage is billed apart from ChatGPT Plus. new-api is a separate open-source gateway, not the official API.
